Hydration Matters for Everyone—Especially Children

Staying well-hydrated is important for people of all ages, but it's especially vital for children, who typically need more water relative to their body size than adults. While anyone can forget to drink enough fluids, children and young people are particularly at risk of dehydration—especially during physical activity, playtime, or in hot weather.

Even mild dehydration can affect how children feel and function. It may lead to fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating, lower cognitive performance, and dry skin or eyes.

Helpful Strategies to Support Hydration in Schools:

  • Make sure drinking water is readily available and that students can refill their bottles regularly.
  • Allow pupils to keep a reusable water bottle with them throughout the day, and provide alternatives if they forget theirs.
  • Encourage regular drinking, particularly after exercise, movement, or during warm weather—this is especially important for younger children.
  • Review and seek feedback on toilet facilities—students may avoid drinking if they feel uncomfortable using school toilets, which can negatively impact their health and wellbeing.
